On one hand brushless motors are known for better performance, but they are dearer to your pockets. On the other hand, brushed motors are the traditionally used type of motors. The nitro fuel is a mixture of multiple chemicals including nitromethane, methanol, as well as synthetic/castor oil. Typically, nitro powered cars are much simpler in design and construction due to the simple working of the engine and hence much cheaper than the gas powered version. However, the only limitation is that the nitro fuel is much costlier than the gas, so you may have to spend a lot of money on fuel over a longer period of time if you are very active driver.
Moreover, nitro powered systems are generally meant for the smaller models or smaller sized cars. If you are interested giant sized monsters, you may prefer roaring gas powered models. As the nitro-powered models are generally preferred only by the highly professional drivers competing in top level competitions, gas powered motor based models enjoy a wider customer base. These gas powered models use a fuel that is a mixture of gasoline and oil. A major advantage of gas powered engines is that they require much lesser maintenance or cleaning and therefore are more dependable and reliable than the nitro powered engines.
It is to be highlighted here that though gas powered engines are much more costly than the nitro or even the electric powered models but the cost limitation is only for the first time purchase. This is because of the cheaper gas as against the electric power or nitro fuel which makes these versions of engines almost equivalent in cost over a longer period of time. As far as the heating performance is concerned, both nitro and gas run engines have the capability of being air cooled, therefore they do not pose major heating problems and can run for long periods on longer race tracks without any danger of burning out or damaging any part. However, electric powered models have to be given breaks for cooling after sometime of racing as their cooling system is not that efficient. On another front, electric engines perform better than the fuel or gas powered engines which is the swiftness in gaining torque. Where electric engines can pick up top torque almost instantaneously when they are switched on, gas or fuel powered engines need to gear up and take time in reaching their full torque. You need to match all these parameters with your preferences, requirements and budget constraints.
After choosing the type of engine you require for your RC car, you can also make a choice of the type of body for RC cars. RC car bodies come in two main categories – on road type and off road type. The main difference in functioning is that the on road type models are only designed for running on smooth surfaces, whereas, the off road type models can run on almost any surface however uneven it may be. The main design feature that makes the off road models capable of handling uneven terrains is their suspension which is almost like our real cars. Opposed to this design are the on road cars which do not have those special suspensions and run on simpler surfaces such as roads and pavement. You cannot run these models on surfaces such as dirt or rocky paths. However, that does not mean they are inferior to on-road models in any sense.
